The Topping on the Christmas Tree

Another year.
Another tree.
A few more ornaments purchased.
A few more broken.

We got our tree today. It's a Home Depot special and we saved about 40 bucks in comparison to last year. And that's ok by me.

The over riding theme of my our tree is glass ball ornaments in whites, blues, greens and silver.

And horses. Horses on ceramic discs. Trail of Painted Pony horses.

On lighting . . . I am a white lights ONLY person. They must be tiny white lights. Colored lights make me dizzy. Or confused. Or both.

I hate to admit it, but after the kids put ornaments on the tree, I rearrange them when they leave. Yes I am crazy, but at least I know it.

So here's an assortment of my favorite ornaments from our my tree.

1. The Disco Ball. Obviously named for it's numerous shimmery mirrors. I have six of these ornaments and closely guard them during the trimming process.

2. Pewter leaves. Oak shaped. Oaks are my favorite tree. Nuff said. (Accompanied by disco ball....)

3. Peppermint candy themed Trail of Painted Ponys ornament. A very cool equestrian.

4. Because it's the first real ornament I bought when Wyatt was just a baby, our tree is never complete with out Thomas being hung and hooked to his truck filled with toys. (Why the English call train cars "trucks" I will never know. But then again they call trucks "lauries" so go figure . . .)

5. And new Horses by Gypsy Mare Studios. I love these colorful horses with their Christmas accents.

Here's a view of a few of the different sized glass ball ornaments and others on the tree.

And the whole tree. Somehow it just does not seem so impressive through the camera lens. I certainly have not mastered the fine art of Christmas tree photography. I'll just add that to my "to do" list, among other things . . .

But. There is a large problem involving lack of balance and tradition here . . .

How so? . . . here's the gruesome evidence close up. That is if you couldn't tell what's wrong with this tree at first glance. This egregious and glaring absence of ornamentation should not go unnoticed. It's the lash for me.

I have nothing to top off this tree.

It's like the tree is missing it's underwear.

What in the world do I put up there? A star? An angel? Something else?

I'm determined to buy something this year to top off this bad boy. I've gone four years running without a tree topper. For shame. Think of the embarrassed trees.

Suggestions? What do you put on your tree top?

I put a cat on top of mine. A floppy stuffed cat from the Hallmark store.

What else? heh

I bought it before the goats.

We have an angel. We've never been without a tree topper...my kids would not allow that!

Bingo's book arrived here safe and sound, thanks so much. I can't wait to share it with the girls next time they sleep over.

The tree is beautiful and I'll bet is smells great! I like your ornaments too. I have always had an angel, and love that but I think most have a star! ;D

We have an angel on ours that my Hubby bought our first Christmas...he looked every where for one with brown hair and said he was sorry he couldn't find one, because my hair is brown, and bought a blond angel! A big bow looks nice on tops of trees too !

Awww it looks lovely. I used to always use an angel, but I've found that I like more light on top. So now I use a star that's sort of stained glass colors. LOVE IT! But then I'm a girl very much opposed to white lights so we might have very differing tastes regarding tree toppers as well. ;)

Your tree looks awesome! Thank you so much for mentioning my ornaments:)
I found a large, pretty snowflake ornament to put at the top of mine, it's too large to hang on a branch and looks nice at the top. Someday I want to sculpt something for the top. Take a photo at night with the lights on. Set you camera to no flash, put it on something that won't move like a table and put the auto timer on. I always get a nice photo that way:)

I have a star on mine, but I'll bet you can't even tell something is missing when it's dark and your tree is lit up!

I like white lights on my tree and inside, but I like colored lights outside!

I'm pretty disapointed in you Julia. Maybe you should just get out your old wedding cake topper and stick that up there.

Yes!

Looks like a nice, fresh tree...does it smell nice? I would just put on a big red Santa hat with the white fur trim - surely you have a few of those laying around the house till you figure out what you want...I prefer angels. I crocheted mine for on top, but also like the big store bought kind with the lights inside...with big wings, preferably with some feathers.

Have a wonderful Christmas time :-) What do your cats think of the tree?

i have both an angel and a star. But, I prefer the star up on our tree.

After all, it has such special meaning to the holiday.

I collect angels of all sorts and have quite a few Christmas angels. I take them out at Christmas and use as decoration along with my Santa collection!

Lovely tree!

Your tree is beautiful. I have to admit I'm a flashing lights kind of woman and the more garish the better but I so admire the beauty of the white lights. I use a tree topper that has been handed down through generations. Maybe you could make one and start your own tradition. I bet Ella could make something wonderful.

I never remember the topper!

How funny! We have gone years without a topper as well! Every year we say we'll get one for next year but then the tree comes down and we forget all about it. Oh well. Your tree is lovely!

Love the tree! Your ornaments are great. We don't have a topper or a skirt. Poor tree! I should work on that. Maybe tie a big ribbon to the top if worse comes to worse?

Well - did u ever put on a tree topper?? I too, was in the same dilemma! It was our first tree in, well - hm - i can't even remember? maybe 7 years?!? and it looked great but no tree topper. we didn't have one packed away, so i guess we never owned one before. I didn't want just any ole thing. So i kept my eye out for a rustic something - but just never found or saw the right thing.... so it went untopped! I think i'll be keeping my eye out at yard sales this summer!

The tree swallows are here already.  They arrived January 30 much to my dismay.  Swooping and calling and chirping their merry song over my ...
