Horse Time: Trit-Troting our Way Through Fall

Just a quick update on Gemma-horse (Dutch warmblood) who is getting her act together with consistent training. One of my friends said to me, "She looks like she could jump a house." Too bad I only ride dressage...

This is the first horse I have owned on who I look size proportionate. You really can not tell that I am an Amazon in size when I ride Gemma.

This trot picture shows Gemma balanced and accepting of her fate. We have had many "discussions" about what she has to get used to. This mare is fussy and has been a long time in taking consistent contact in the reins. She would much rather trot around with me not touching her mouth. Too bad, so sad... Just so you have a point of reference, the feeling of the rein contact should be only that necessary to keep the rein from flopping between my hand and the bit. No heavy weight is pressing on my fingers.

Here is the canter gait. Again Gemma is coming to terms with her job and is lightly taking connection without throwing her head randomly about.

There are days that after riding this horse, I can not help but have a gigantic grin on my face. She is getting more fun to train all the time. I think I am truly blessed to have this wonderful mare!

You don't look like an Amazon on Sharpie! But, Gemma is so much more elegant. Lovely.

Julia and Gemma - Two lovely brunettes!

By the way, you are not "Amazonian" in proportion! You are willowly, elegant, and tall!

I would love to be able to learn to ride a horse. My family comes from pl;aces where everybody did it, but I grew up in the city. It's just too late now, so I'll just read about your great horse.

Wow! The photos are amazing, the background...you and the horse...beautiful! It sounds like training is coming along well! Maybe I missed it in an earlier post but how tall are you? If the average height for women in the US is 5'4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height) there might be a lot of us who qualify as Amazons!

You look so happy. I have to admit, I've only ridden a horse once in my life. I rode bareback and it was so much harder than I thought it would be.

She looks fantastic! There is nothing more gratifying than when the training sticks and they get it. You should be proud.

You two look beautiful together and I bet you would be a fantastic jumper. It's really a thrill sailing over those jumps with the perfect partner.
Anyway, I'm glad you two are happy together and doing so well. I think these mares can be kind of difficult so I've switched to clicker training and just starting to make great strides.
Thanks for the beautiful photos of the two of you.
